Thomas Tisdale was born in South Carolina and has practiced law in Charleston, South Carolina, for more than 30 years.

Tisdale, a former municipal judge, is a past president of the South Carolina Bar and has served on the boards of many educational, legal and civic organizations. For example, he has served on the Board of Regents of the University of the South, the Board of Trustees of Voorhees College, the Board of Spoleto Festival USA and the Board of the South Carolina Aquarium.

He is founder and first chairman of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge in the United States, the American branch of an English missionary society that publishes books and fosters distribution of Christian literature worldwide. From 1975-1985, he served as chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina.

Tisdale, a graduate of the University of the South and the University of South Carolina School of Law, lives in Charleston.
